If your interests lie in sailing through turquoise waters from one stunning island to the next, then the Whitsunday Islands National Park is the place to go. There are 74 islands in the group, off the central Queensland coast, offering something for just about every taste and budget. Seven of the islands are developed with resorts including the five star Hayman Island Resort, the popular Hamilton Island resort and the eco-friendly Long Island Wilderness Lodge. The vast majority of islands are within national park protection and offer a more rugged, back-to-nature experience with beach camping and bushwalking.
The town of Airlie Beach is the launching pad for charters, tours or flights, making it an active tourist town with a lively night life. It also offers a good range of accommodation, restaurants and is a good place to get your scuba diving certification. Abel Point Marina is where a multitude of boat charter companies are located and Shute Harbour is where ferries and tour companies depart.
