ninikins 17th September 2006, 18:26 What languages do children learn in school in France? I'm just wondering about that. In my country The Netherlands kids are taught french, english and german.

baileym1 8th October 2006, 05:08 I knew a French student who spoke English, French, German, and Italian. I don't know if that is the norm or not.
samdebretagne 8th October 2006, 08:59 In Primary school, most have the choice of doing English or German (but the majority choose English). Later on in middle school/high school, they can add a second language or even a third depending on what route they are following. Common choices are Spanish or Italian, but Chinese and Russian are slowly becoming more popular.
I'd say that the large majority though graduate without speaking one language really well (besides French of course). The classtime devoted to languages is very small, and they focus WAY too much on grammar, and not enough on practical usage and speaking. So your average French student will be able to tell you "I have a yellow pencil", but not ask for directions or have a meaningful conversation.
loufoque 10th October 2006, 16:46 Our ecole does french, obviously, and english then at college they have the choice of adding latin breton or spanish or german. The local lycee offers a course majoring in Italian french spanish english and french. There are specialist breton schools where the teaching is done from maternelle upwards in a mixture of french and breton. In this part of brittany breton is very much a living language. perhaps Sam can say if this is true of southern Brittany as Im not sure how far the language extends.
samdebretagne 10th October 2006, 19:26 I wouldn't say Breton was a living language here, just that there is a small percentage of the population that is trying to keep it alive. There are several bilingual French-Breton schools around here, and they actually do more hours of English per week than the regular French schools (ex: in primary, they do 1/2 hr every day compared to 45 min classes twice per week).
I find it to be a really fascinating language, in fact I'm going to start taking Breton classes myself pretty soon. A lot of French people (my in-laws included) don't understand why I want to do this, because to them, it's a dying language that won't be useful for anything, but it's part of the culture/history of this region, so ithat's a good enough reason for me.
Toc 10th October 2006, 22:23 In south of France, "Provencal" is still alive and well spoken by native people.
In my city (Nice) there is a specific language "Nissart" that students can learn at school. Many regions of France keep alive their original language which is a part of the local culture.
jeremiah1396 7th July 2008, 16:15 Hi, english is the first foreign language the children will learn in France. After that spanish is probably the most popular, then german then italian. But it varies from region to region, seeing as France has a border with spain, germany and italy, as well as other german, italian and spanish speaking countries... On top of these there are the regional languages such as Alsacien and Breton which may be taught in their respective regions. Hope this helps! x
giseleb89 29th July 2008, 10:18 But the French school system still has some problems with languages as mentioned before. I don't know what the mistake is that they are making, but too many French simply can't speak a foreign language properly. That's quite sad!
