What is the "average" French house like in terms of size? I live in a very old house in a very old neighborhood where houses top out at 1400 square feet, but "McMansions" in the suburbs can get quite sprawling in the US. I always picture French homes as smallish. Is that accurate?

Hi
Here, 1400 ft2 is a normal size 4 bedroom house, or a quite large 3 bedroom house.
But worth remembering that properties in the South also have covered terraces (we always eat outdoors from April to November, less so in the winter, but sometimes on 1st January for breakfast ! ) and summer kitchens.
If you are not near the Med, you need a large lounge (salon) for the times you spend indoors.

The Dordogne hardly ever has snow, but in Febuary this year we had what a local told me was the worst snow for 20 to 30 years! There are picyures on my blog.

1400 sq ft for a 4 bedroom house seems a little small. About what does that cost? Just curious as to how it compares to U.S. prices. We have a 4 bedroom 1600 sq ft house and it even feels a little small.

European countries, I believe, live in a little less space than Americans do. Heck, MOST countries live in more space than we do.

Bob is has snowed here every winter since we arrived and every winter the locals look surprised and tell us it is the worst snow for 20 or 30 years!! When I lived in Egypt Cairo flooded every year and each year the egyptians said "coo what a surprise this rarely happens" . People seem to have short memories about the weather... I think its to lure unsuspecting foriegners to their shores!! Its a plot I tell you!!
